The Death of the Cover Band?

The Death of the Cover band?

I will tell you the truth, I don't have allot of time for cover bands, why? Because most of the ones I have seen are just plain damn dull, playing songs by numbers and giving the audience a poor imitation of the original. As the listener you are simply left with your favourite songs played with none of the passion, soul, or care and attention of the group or artist who originally performed it.

Stick the jukebox up louder and I'd personally be allot happier.

One of the key problems for the majority of cover bands is that they switch genres of popular music at the flick of a switch, one minute knocking out Travis's "Why does it always rain on me?" next minute hammering through "Teenage Kicks". Travis and The Undertones are totally different, by trying to play too many styles of popular music the average covers band becomes the tradesman who is 'Jack of all trades - Master of none!' Why try to be a human jukebox? If I went to see the Rolling Stones would I want them to throw in a few Oasis or Blur numbers to bring their material up to date? I think not.

Another particular bug bear of myself would be the cover band lead singer who believes he or she needs to sound like the artist he or she is covering, AxI Rose cannot be imitated, don't even attempt it people!

I would enjoy cover bands more if they all decided to stick to one area of pop or rock, and perfect it, or even better, move on, write a few songs, even if they're crap, you'll still have that smug self satisfaction that you're doing something you've done yourself!

Let originality rule.
