The Indices Live at The Old Ship Dorchester May 8th 2010
We arrived at the old ship in plenty of time to see the band set up before the gig started, I had checked out The Indices on MySpace and Jamie Pinnow who now runs Bar Rouge recommended them to me, I thought recorded they sounded really good but would they sound the same live? I'm pleased to report that they certainly do!
Charles the lead singer and guitarist coolly announced to the crowd who they were and refreshingly that they were going to perform two sets of their own material, apart from a couple of covers (Jumping Jack Flash and Empire by Kasabian) they launched into their first set with a delicate refrain, their songs, unlike their fellow Dorchester band Thomas and The Mock Ups are not high energy, or that intense, but are instead creatively crafted indie anthems that are profound and at times deeply captivating,
I cannot pin point one band that they sound like which is always a good thing, but they have an eclectic list of influences on their MySpace page, Kate Bush to Rage Against The Machine! They don't command the stage like Thomas and The Mock Ups and there's no on stage histrionics, they let their music do the talking and when they can produce songs of the calibre of "Only At The Weekend" "Spite you" "Take you down" and the beautiful "I Know Where You Are" they can get away with it. I do feel though that the band do need to engage with the audience a little more than they did, unfortunately it is a fact that on a Saturday night most people in the pub did not come out to watch and listen to the band, they need to be enticed and then grabbed into paying attention. One other small criticism would be, the guitar solo's could have stood out a little more from the rest of the songs by adding a little extra volume and possibly a little extra over-drive.

The band have been given a fabulous opportunity by The Old Ship to build a good local following by booking the band every month until November, most pubs would baulk of the idea of a band playing their own stuff on a Monday night let alone on a regular Saturday night slot. I would also like to comment on the venue, In my opinion The Old Ship is one of the most palatial venues I have been too recently, the leather seats are very comfy!
My self and my good friend who accompanied me will be back to see The Indices again, as I hope you will be too, because these guys are good, very good indeed!
