Disco's out (Murders in) No Work Till Friday, O Neil's pub Bournemouth
Hi there and welcome to my new Blog, my intention is to review and bring to your attention the fantastic range of talent there is in Dorset and not just Bournemouth and Poole. I'm talking of such bands as Thomas and the Mock ups, The Indices, Epic Journey as well as Bournemouth, Poole and based bands such as The Longest Day, Disco's out (murders in), and The Neon Tigers plus much more. I'm going to be honest and constructive, and open to all genres of music.
And so to my first review.....
Discos Out (Murders in) at O Neil's Pub Bournemouth Sunday May 4th 2010.
Having seen Discos Out (murders in) at the DMA we decided to make the trip to Bournemouth to see them again, the pub was busy for a Sunday night being a bank holiday weekend and we got to see the last of SI CROCKETT and sets by SKETCHES OF THE ADVERSE and NION ABEO
out of these bands I was most impressed by Si Crockett and NION ABEO, but all the bands enjoyed a good reception from the crowd and refreshingly for someone used to being in pubs where bands tend to play usual cover versions, all the bands played at least a partial set of their own songs.
Having made a special trip from Dorchester to see Disco's out (murders in) and promising a good friend of mine that his head was about to be blown away by their performance, my heart sank a little when Lead singer Steve Perry told me that it was a stripped down version of Disco's out for the night, having no horn section at all, Ed learned the bass lines and Steve declared that he was going to turn the amps up and enjoy himself, "in my mind the songs sound great" he told me.
We managed to grab front row seats as Steve, Ed and Tubbs took to the stage, complete with added DJ from Dusty Cuts, Kazoo and amps turned up, wearing lamp shades on their heads, but without full costumes tonight. We should not have worried. The band showed what being real performers is all about, not only did Ed nail the bass lines but the songs sounded fresh, chaotic, and compelled the subdued audience wake up and take notice of the band, after their first song the atmosphere definitely changed inside the room. No doubt the songs were not the same without the horns and keyboards, but Steve and the rest of the band made up for it with their infectious enthusiasm. Songs such as "Beefcakes and Lime" and "Blow my mind" sizzled in the air, the audience were dancing, this is what bank holidays should be about. All too soon Steve announced that this was going to be their last song, the band came off to rapturous applause. In my opinion these guys are one of the best good time bands around, no self respecting party should be without them!
The original plan was to get going straight away, but we decided that it may be worth checking out Dusty Cuts.
I was very pleased we did, blending Ska with DJs is a cracking concept, but is hard to get right, too much scratching would distract from the excellent songs they accompany, the band successfully manage it, all the elements coming together into a sophisticated, well honed, infectious blast of good dance music. Performing live, the band know how to grab peoples attention, crucial when playing in a pub where the audience haven't necessarily just come out to see the band, songs like "Get down" and "Pass it on" really are a treat to listen too,we would have loved to hear more but unfortunately we had to leave before the band finished their set. hopefully though during the promised hot summer we'll be able to catch the areas good time bands again, with a large beer in my hand, shorts on, shades on and a huge slice of fun!

The lamp shade came off halfway through.
